Details of Laboratories

Basic Electrical Engineering & Networks Laboratory

This lab is divided for two subjects. We give the introduction of the basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering. This course contains the Basic Parts of Electrical and Electronics Engineering which is offered to the students of all 7 branches of the college. In this course students learns Electrical symbols and use of rheostats, Electromagnetic induction and open circuit characteristics of D C Generator, parts of DC machines and DC motor starter, RLC series circuit and Transformer study from Electrical Engineering and from Electronics Engineering they study CRO and Signal generator, PN junction and Zener diode, Half wave and full wave rectifier and common emitter transistor amplifier characteristics. In the revised structure of SPU in place of FC107, EE151 is introduced w.e.f. July 2007.

Electrical Engineering 1 is offered in 2nd semester to the students of Computer Engg, Electronics and Communication Engg, and Electrical Engg. In this course the students performs the practical on Load test on DC shunt generator, series generator, compound generator and series motor. Other then this they also studies the RLC parallel circuit and power measurement in single phase and three phase circuit. They also studies the parts of synchronous machines, induction motor starters and non conventional energy sources. In the revised structure of SPU in place of PC105, EE152 & EE 153 are introduced w.e.f. July 2007. In the revised structure of SPU  EE253:Electrical Networks is introduced w.e.f. July 2008.

Electrical Machines Laboratory

Department offers 2 subjects in machines laboratory. First subject is offered in 2nd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 203 : Electrical Engineering II) and second subject is offered in 3rd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 309 Electrical Machines).
Electrical Engineering II: In the revised structure of SPU in place of EE203, EE257 is introduced w.e.f. July 2008.


In this subject the students perform the practicals on open circuit test and short circuit tests on a single –phase transformer, parallel operation of two 1-phase transformers and to observe how the two x-mers share the common load, different connection for three phase transformer, three phase supply into two phase supply using Scott’s connections, study of circle diagram of a 3Ô induction motor and to determine all the possible parameters of the induction motor with the help of the circle diagram, V-Curves of a synchronous motor, O.C. & S.C. tests on a 3-phase Alternator and there by find % regulation at various loads and power factor, synchronization of the alternator with infinite bus bar, load characteristics of a 3Ô induction motor, the working of induction motor starters, squirrel cage as well as slip ring induction motor. The laboratory contains all the above equipments.

Electrical Machines:

In this subject the students perform the practicals an alternator to find out voltage regulation by synchronous impedance, mmf method, and ZPF method and slip test to find out reactance is performed. Practicals on induction motor to find out the unbalance condition and effect of variation in supply voltage and frequency are performed. Also load test on induction motor and repulsion motor is performed.

Electrical Measurement & Power Electronics Laboratory

Department offers 2 subjects in measurement laboratory. First subject is offered in 2nd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 202: Electrical Measurement I) and second subject is offered in 3rd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 309 Electrical Measurement II). In the revised structure of SPU in place of EE202, EE254 is introduced w.e.f. July 2008.

Electrical Measurement I:

In this subject the students perform the practical on Value of the unknown resistance by Wheatstone Bridge, Kelvin’s double bridge, loss of charge method. Also practical on calibration of ammeter, voltmeter and energy meter, and also to extend the range of ammeter and volt meter are performed. Practical to find out the sensitivity and resistance of galvanometer.

Electrical Measurement II:

In this subject the students perform the practical on measurement of power by Barlow method using CTs and PTs, extension of Watt meter range, measurement of active and reactive powers are performed. The department has full fledged facility to perform all the practical.

Power Electronics and Drives 1:

In this laboratory the students perform practicals based on characteristics of power diode, MOSFET, power transistor and SCR. They also perform practicals based on different types of converters and also of firing of SCR by different types. In the revised structure of SPU  EE252 is introduced w.e.f. July 2008.

Power Systems Laboratory

Department offers 4 subjects in power systems laboratory. First subject is offered in 2nd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 204: Power Systems I) and two subjects are offered in 3rd year of Electrical Engineering (EE 310 Power Systems II and EE 313: Power Systems Protection). 4th subject (EE 410 : Electrical Switchgear) is offered in final year. In the revised structure of SPU in place of EE204, EE256 is introduced w.e.f. July 2008.

Power Systems I:
This is very basic subject and in this subject basic topics of power system are taken. In this subject the students perform the practicals on study of different power stations and Transmission and Distribution Systems. Also they perform practicals based on short and medium transmission line characteristics and voltage distribution on string of insulators. Also they study the characteristics of Fuses and MCBs.


Power Systems II:
In this subject the students perform practicals based on relay characteristics and CT characteristics. Also students are given knowledge of MATLAB and simulations for different types of fault.


Power system protection:
in this lab the practical based on different type of protections like parallel feeder, radial feeder, generator differential, reverse power and transformer differential protection is carried out.


Electrical Switchgear:
In this subject the students gets knowledge of microprocessor based relays and different types of switchgear. Department has all types of relay from electromechanical to latest microprocessor based relays.

Microprocessor & Instrumentation Laboratory

This laboratory reflects the advancements of electrical engineering. In this laboratory the advance topics like micro processors, Micro controllers, are covered. In this lab the practicals based on following subjects are covered.

• Microprocessor Fundamentals
• Microprocessor Applications To Electrical Systems
• Instrumentation
• Electrical Project

Microprocessor Fundamental:

In this subject the students perform practicals based on Microprocessor fundamentals i.e. introduction to microprocessor kit, different types of instructions like data transfer, arithmetic, logical, and branching instructions and programming based on all above instruction sets. They are also doing practicals on different types of code conversion techniques. The department has 30 microprocessor kits with different study cards to perform the practicals.


Microprocessor Applications To Electrical Systems:

This is advance version of microprocessor fundamentals in which students performs practicals on different types of monitor programs, and also interfacing of various study cards like 8155, 8255, 8279, 8259, 8253 etc. also they perform interfacing of different real time applications cards like stepper motor, temperature controller, 7 segment display, elevator control.
They also perform practicals on Microcontroller kits for programming. The department has 15 microcontroller kits.

Instrumentation:

The department has facilities of analog instrumentation and microprocessor based instrumentation. The practicals based on LVDT, RTD, Thermistor, Thermocouple, pressure gauge, strain gauge are performed by analog as well as with microprocessor kits.

Electrical Project:

The students are given electrical projects based on latest innovations in the field of electrical engineering. They are using the facilities of the lab.

High Voltage Engineering Laboratory

This lab consist of solid, liquid and gaseous breakdown measurement facilities. solid break down can be done up to 30 KV. Similarly, liquid test kit allows the break down up to 60 KV and gaseous breakdown arrangement is capable of withstanding 50KV A.C. and 70KV D.C. one advance facility in terms of impulse generator of 150KV has been provided to test the impulse voltages for the different electrodes electrostatic fields can be measured using electrolytic tank.

Power System Simulation Laboratory

This lab consists of two different types of software used in Electrical Engineering namely PSCAD and MIPOWER. MIPOWER is 10 user licensed software used for simulation of various equipments in Electrical Engineering.

PSCAD is 5 user licensed software purchased under DST Grant 2008 funded by Department of Science & Technology for completion of Research Project.

The elective subject named as Programmable Logic Controller and Automation is also covered under this lab. The lab contains different PLCs of various companies like Allen Bradley, Siemens etc. The suppliers of the PLC includes Scientech, Hem electronics etc.

 All the above applications are supported by 20 computers of the department.
